Description of critical habitat of the Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer in Grasslands National Park of Canada

The Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer (Coluber constrictor flaviventris) is a species listed on Schedule 1 to the Species at Risk Act as threatened. Critical habitat for the Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer is identified within the final Recovery Strategy for the Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer (Coluber constrictor flaviventris) in Canada.

Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to subsection 58(2) of the Species at Risk Act, critical habitat of the Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer in Grasslands National Park of Canada is located within the following five sites, save and except any existing anthropogenic features that occur in these areas, such as trails and roads. Site numbers are based on the unique Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) species identification number for the Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer (280), and critical habitat parcel number. All coordinates below refer to the North American Datum of 1983, UTM Zone 13. Further details regarding critical habitat (including a map) can be found in the Recovery Strategy for the Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer in Canada, posted on the Species at Risk Public Registry Web site.

Critical habitat includes all currently used hibernacula and the immediate adjacent areas within a 500 m radius of those hibernacula. Within the identified geographical boundaries, the biophysical attributes of critical habitat for this prairie snake include the following: mammal burrows, rock crevices or ledges, caves or deep holes in soft hillside soil or abandoned cisterns that provide fracturing, humidity, cover and thermal momentum required for suitable hibernation sites; soft soil or burrows to lay eggs in; dense vegetation (mixed-grass prairie and sagebrush thickets) to maintain concealment from predators and house suitable prey; and large rocks for cover or basking.
