Common name : Spring salamander

Scientific name : Gyrinophilus porphyriticus

Status : Special Concern

Reason for designation : This species has a limited, fragmented range and specialized habitat requirements.  It is susceptible to habitat degradation leading to population loss.  Because of low dispersal rates, as well as late sexual maturity, populations that are lost have little chance of recovery.

Occurrence : Ontario and Quebec

Status history : Designated Special Concern in April 1999.  Status re-examined and confirmed Special Concern in May 2002.  Last assessment based on an existing status report.
